Opportunities
Below is a list of the possible performing events in this area in which our students participate, a description of each, and an explanation of age requirements, location, dates, fees, grading, and judging.
Concerto Competitions: Winner performs with symphony
NC Symphony - Early May - Grades 9 through 12
Durham Symphony/Raleigh Symphony - November - Grades 9-12
Tar River Symphony - April - Grades 9 through 12
Music Organization Competitions:
Music Teachers National Association
Statewide competition held at the NCMTA State Conference in October - Winner advances to the Southern Division in January - Southern Division winner advances to the National Division in March - Levels are Junior High, Senior High, College - All instruments and voice - Requires 30 to 45 minutes of memorized performance - Very high level for serious, artistic students with much performing experience
NC Music Teachers Association
Junior A/B and Senior A/B levels - 3 pieces chosen off a required list - District and State levels - District in February and State in April - held at Meredith College - If a student receives a Superior at the District, he/she goes to the State Finals - If a Superior is received at State, the Student is asked to perform at the NCMTA State Conference held in October - Graduing system consists of Fari, Good, Very Good, Excellent, and Superior - Performing and judging are on a high level
Raleigh Piano Teachers Association
Young Artist Auditions - held in March at Meredith College - Beginners to advanced - Two solo pieces required and one must be by an American composer - Levels are Junior I/II/III, Intermediate I/II, Senior I/II, Young Artist I/II, and Concerto - Royalty categories for Junior and Senior High requiring one solo piece - First place winners in competitive categories perform on Honors Recital on Sunday of the following week - Trophies and monetary prizes are awarded
RPTA Scholarship Auditions
Junior and Senior High Students - held in February at Meredith College - Requires 3 memorized pieces, all scales, arpeggios, cadences, sightreading, and discussion of music history and composers of students' pieces - Very high level - Two winners in each level - Monetary prizes -Winners perform their pieces in a special recital on Sunday of the following week
Raleigh Conservatory of Music Performances:
RCM Performance Festival
All ages and levels - held in February at RCM - All day event - Competitive and non competitive levels - 34 categories by age and level - All pieces memorized except hymns and hymn arrangements - Students may enter as many categories as they wish - Lunch provided for those staying all day - Students who place First through Fourth in competitive categories are asked to perform on an Honors Recital on the following Sunday - Certificates and monetary prizes awarded
Senior Recitals
Special recitasl given by graduating high school seniors at RCM - Reception provided by RCM and participating parents - Gifts given by teachers to honor their students
RCM Recitals
Available for all RCM students - held in November and May on Fridays and Sundays at RCM - Sign up sheets posted on our lobby door close to the time of the recital - Those studying another instrument may perform on a recital as well

RPTA Musicales
Recitals held in the Fall and Spring on a Sunday afternoon at Meredith College - For all ages - One solo piece
RPTA Ensemble Festival
All ages and levels - Students play duets on several pianos - Team up with other students - May compete for solo and duet categories in addition to playing in an ensemble
Campbell University
High School students - Held in mid February at Campbell University - Two solos - First, Second, and Third places awarded - Monetary prizes - Open competition - Lunch provided for the student and one adult
